Help - Concerned about use of a muscle relaxer, Soma/Carisoprodol

Hello friends! So two months ago, I was a mess with MTX side effects, muscle spasm in my back and general flaring around my hips and lower back. A mess. I wasn't sleeping and my pain level was out of control. My doctor gave me Soma 250mg which I took intermittently and only 1/2 a pill. Last week, I had a bad flare and took it nightly for a couple of days. Now it feels like I can't sleep unless I take it. And I feel fine! So I can only think that I have become chemically dependent on it after 5 days of nightly use. I called my doc and he told me to take flexeril instead. But I don't want to take anything (I'm on Mobic and Enbrel). I haven't slept (a good sleep, that is) for the last four days. I can't believe I am able to go to work for 10 hours.   Read more...

Common uses

Soma (carisoprodol) is a prescription medication classified as a muscle relaxant. As a muscle relaxant, it can help relieve the discomfort caused by muscle spasms. A muscle spasm is an uncontrollable contraction of a muscle. Muscle spasms can cause pain, tenderness, and stiffness. Sometimes muscles spasms in the neck can cause headaches. Muscle spasms are a frequent cause of back pain. Most often, muscle spasms are caused by injury, overuse, or similar problems (like sleeping in a strange position). Soma usually works well for these types of muscle spasms. It is intended to be used generally for a maximum of two to three weeks at a time. This should be enough time to allow any muscle injury or damage to heal. If you feel that the problem has not improved after two or three weeks, check with your healthcare provider. You may have an ongoing problem that needs to be treated differently.

Before using

Soma is taken orally. The usual adult dosage of soma is one 350 mg tablet, three times daily and at bedtime. Usage in patients under age 12 is not recommended. It is recommended that you take Soma with food, or with milk, to minimize the likelihood that you will suffer an upset stomach as a result of taking the medication.

Warnings/Precautions

Do not take Soma if you have acute intermittent porphyria. Before taking Soma, tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease. You may need a lower dose or special monitoring during your therapy. It is not known whether Soma will harm an unborn baby. Do not take Soma without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. It is also not known whether Soma passes into breast milk. Do not take Soma without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Soma is not approved for use in children younger than 12 years of age.

Side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using Soma and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects: paralysis (loss of feeling), extreme weakness or lack of coordination, feeling light-headed, fainting, fast heartbeat, seizure (convulsions), vision loss or agitation, confusion. Less serious side effects may include, drowsiness, dizziness, tremor, headache, depression, feeling irritable, blurred vision, sleep problems (insomnia) or nausea, vomiting, hiccups, upset stomach. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect.

Missed dose

If you miss a Soma dose, take it as soon as remembered if it is within an hour or so. If you do not remember until later, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not 'double-up' the Soma dose to catch up.

Overdose

If a person overdoses on Soma, the symptoms can vary. Some reported symptoms of a Soma overdose include: Loss of life , Coma , Slow or shallow breathing , Low blood pressure (hypotension) , Seizures , Delirium or hallucinations , Uncontrollable muscle contractions , Uncontrollable eye movements , Blurred vision , Dilated (wide open) pupils , An unexplained pleasant feeling (euphoria) , Rigidity , Problems with muscle coordination , Headaches. Combining Soma with alcohol or other prescription medications increases the risk of dangerous overdose symptoms. Deaths have occurred due to intentional and accidental Soma overdoses.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature 15°-30°C (59°-86°F). Dispense in a tight container.
